This Week
Well this week is pretty much explained by pictures so here we go.
This is the preemie outfit we bought to take Haven home from the hospital in, however, she is now 4 weeks old and its still so big it just swallows her. I think it was not true to size personally. Anyways, I think she looks so stinkin' cute in this thing. Its her "back to school" outfit.
So this was the hardest day of our lives as parents so far. I got a very disturbing phone call from our pediatrician on Tuesday morning saying that her newborn screening came back with an "abnormality in her hemoglobin". She said that she needed to check Haven immediately (as in TODAY) for a possible blood disorder. She said they were going to check it against 600 possibilities. NOT what any first time mom (or any mom for that matter) wants to hear about their child.
So needless to say I was a complete mess, Adam had to come home from work in the middle of the day to help me take her to the hospital where they were going to have to do the testing and blood work. The lab was a whole other terrible experience. We checked in and the nurse came to call us back and said in a very irritated tone "Well, y'all come back and we'll see what we can do." I said "What do you mean what you can do? Haven't you ever taken blood from an infant before? " Her response to that was "well, we just don't do this unless they are really sick" I wanted to say "Do you not have ANY people skills lady?" What kind of idiot lab worker says that? She might have well just said "I think your child is dying" I mean SERIOUSLY! I just wanted to grab Haven and run out of there. Of course in my mind I am also thinking WHAT is wrong with my child? What kind of crazy blood disease does she have and how is it going to affect the rest of her life? At this point I still had no idea HOW they were going to take blood. Adam and I both thought it would just be the heel prick thing....OH NO, they took TWO TUBES of blood from her arm. Need I mention that she is a baby and doesn't have all that much blood anyways! Oh my gosh, I had no idea something could hurt me so bad that I was not even personally experiencing. Adam had to hold her and I cried in the corner of the room while it was being done. I still get teary when I think about it. When we left the she was as white as a ghost and pretty much slept the entire evening. Afterwards we went home and just waited by the phone hoping for the results to be back that day (which we were told it was possible). We waited and waited and no phone call. The next morning her pediatrician called and said that they had ruled out some of the major blood disorders, but she was still waiting for a hemoglobin specialist to get back to her and would call me as soon as she knew something. Well, I had to take her to the doctor yesterday for some congestion and allergy issues she is having and they had the results back from the labs and she said, everything came back totally normal. What a relief! Also, she weighed 7 lbs 5 oz!
Is this not the saddest thing you have ever seen? She was such a little trooper!
Here is her first lunch date with her good friend Harper (Future ACU Roommates).
We went to eat mexican food. YUM

She is so cute!
BUT let me point out the silver lining here : YOU NEVER HAVE TO WORRY THAT YOUR CHILD HAS ONE OF THOSE RARE BLOOD DISORDERS..and I bet they screened her for metabolic disorders too, so you can rest easy that none of those strange abnormal things will EVER pop up in your future! Scary as heck now, I know but gives you some peace for the future....there you go, my specialty pointing out whatever silver lining I can find ;)
She's gorgeous, mommy you're doing an AWESOME JOB!! Keep it up!!!!
Some people........ (the nurse!) I'll be nice and just say "bless her heart" but you know what I'm thinking!
I'm sorry I didn't get over this weekend to your mom's to see you. It was crazy. I'm dying to get my hands on her again. I'm glad she's doing so well in the "growing dept."
