This Week

Well this week is pretty much explained by pictures so here we go.

This is the preemie outfit we bought to take Haven home from the hospital in, however, she is now 4 weeks old and its still so big it just swallows her. I think it was not true to size personally. Anyways, I think she looks so stinkin' cute in this thing. Its her "back to school" outfit.

Look at those sleeves! She looks like she is jumping
So this was the hardest day of our lives as parents so far. I got a very disturbing phone call from our pediatrician on Tuesday morning saying that her newborn screening came back with an "abnormality in her hemoglobin". She said that she needed to check Haven immediately (as in TODAY) for a possible blood disorder. She said they were going to check it against 600 possibilities. NOT what any first time mom (or any mom for that matter) wants to hear about their child.

So needless to say I was a complete mess, Adam had to come home from work in the middle of the day to help me take her to the hospital where they were going to have to do the testing and blood work. The lab was a whole other terrible experience. We checked in and the nurse came to call us back and said in a very irritated tone "Well, y'all come back and we'll see what we can do." I said "What do you mean what you can do? Haven't you ever taken blood from an infant before? " Her response to that was "well, we just don't do this unless they are really sick" I wanted to say "Do you not have ANY people skills lady?" What kind of idiot lab worker says that? She might have well just said "I think your child is dying" I mean SERIOUSLY! I just wanted to grab Haven and run out of there. Of course in my mind I am also thinking WHAT is wrong with my child? What kind of crazy blood disease does she have and how is it going to affect the rest of her life? At this point I still had no idea HOW they were going to take blood. Adam and I both thought it would just be the heel prick thing....OH NO, they took TWO TUBES of blood from her arm. Need I mention that she is a baby and doesn't have all that much blood anyways! Oh my gosh, I had no idea something could hurt me so bad that I was not even personally experiencing. Adam had to hold her and I cried in the corner of the room while it was being done. I still get teary when I think about it. When we left the she was as white as a ghost and pretty much slept the entire evening. Afterwards we went home and just waited by the phone hoping for the results to be back that day (which we were told it was possible). We waited and waited and no phone call. The next morning her pediatrician called and said that they had ruled out some of the major blood disorders, but she was still waiting for a hemoglobin specialist to get back to her and would call me as soon as she knew something. Well, I had to take her to the doctor yesterday for some congestion and allergy issues she is having and they had the results back from the labs and she said, everything came back totally normal. What a relief! Also, she weighed 7 lbs 5 oz!

Is this not the saddest thing you have ever seen? She was such a little trooper!

Nurse Gracie, checking on her patient.....she gave her "lab report" and it was good

Here is her first lunch date with her good friend Harper (Future ACU Roommates).
We went to eat mexican food. YUM

This is her friend Sheaden Romeo.
The will probably grow up like siblings more than friends.
Thes kiddos are 10 days apart.

Wow, that's a lot of trauma for a little one (and her parents) to go through, just to find out that NOTHING was wrong! I got choked up just thinking about how you must have felt. I'm so sorry you had to go through that so early on in your motherhood.

I am glad she is healthy and putting on the pounds. You are doing such a great job already!

What sweet, sweet pictures. I'm so glad that the bloodwork came back fine. How sad that some people don't have the common sense to word things a little nicer so as not to freak a parent out!

YEAH for an update!! I am sooo sorry for all that you had to go through. You would think the nurse would have had a little heart and choose her words more carefully. She must not have kids of her own! Love all the pictures! I wish we lived closer so Brayden and Haven could be friends! When we come to Texas in October maybe we can get together for dinner! Mexican food sounds delicious!

So glad everything is normal. I know how you feel...Elijah was diagnosed with a blood clotting disorder as a newborn and it was very scary for us at first. Now everything is under control, but hearing it initially caused us a lot of grief. She is so cute and seems to be growing just fine! :-)

She is so cute!
That is so shocking and I'm so sorry for you guys! That makes me cry just thinking about it.

BUT let me point out the silver lining here : YOU NEVER HAVE TO WORRY THAT YOUR CHILD HAS ONE OF THOSE RARE BLOOD DISORDERS..and I bet they screened her for metabolic disorders too, so you can rest easy that none of those strange abnormal things will EVER pop up in your future! Scary as heck now, I know but gives you some peace for the future....there you go, my specialty pointing out whatever silver lining I can find ;)

She's gorgeous, mommy you're doing an AWESOME JOB!! Keep it up!!!!

Wow! What a week! I've been trying to keep up with you via this blog and was worried when you hadn't written in a couple of days.

Some people........ (the nurse!) I'll be nice and just say "bless her heart" but you know what I'm thinking!

I'm sorry I didn't get over this weekend to your mom's to see you. It was crazy. I'm dying to get my hands on her again. I'm glad she's doing so well in the "growing dept."

You three give each other a hug for me!

Love you guys-

I am so glad that every thing is okay. She is so tiny...and just precious! I promise that we are going to come and visit as soon as we get rid of snotty nose! Maddox is having serious allergy issues of his own. We are about to be on allergy med number two! Hopefully we will get it figured out before he gets a third ear infection! Call me if you need any thing!!
